Symptoms of receding gums

Raised gums can take serious and less serious forms. In gingivitis, you suffer from inflammation of the gums. This causes you to suffer more tooth plaque. In the worst case, the inflammation spreads to the supporting tissues and then we are talking about parodontitis. You can recognise raised gums not only by sensitivity to cold and hot food and drinks. There are other different characteristics of high gums.

1. Sensitive teeth due to receding gums

Sensitive teeth is one of the first signs. Gums protect the roots of your teeth, and when they recede, these roots are exposed, which can cause sensitivity. If your teeth are constantly very sensitive when you eat or drink something that is hot, cold or even acidic, it is a signal of pulled-up gums.

2. Red or swollen gums as a symptom

Red or swollen gums can indicate ulcers or the presence of too much dental plaque. It is important to stop the inflammation from spreading.

3. Bleeding gums

Healthy gums do not bleed during brushing. Bleeding gums are a sign of inflammation, which can indicate gum disease. 1 It can be the first indication of an onset of inflammation. The earlier that is treated, the better, so that the inflammation cannot spread.

4. Longer teeth

As the gums recede, your teeth appear to grow longer. This can be a cosmetic problem, but can also indicate a more serious underlying problem. The raised gums mean you see more dentin. So this is a signal that you need to take measures to prevent further irritation.

5. Indentations in the gums

The normal edge of the gums is smooth and round. Indentations and unevenness may indicate receding gums.

6. Teeth that appear loose

In extreme cases, gum loss can cause teeth to appear loose. This is a serious problem that can cause tooth loss.

Apart from the above symptoms, there are other causes of raised gums. For example, it is common for people to suffer from bone covering on the teeth. But it can also be just the opposite, that there is too little bone. It is also possible that while wearing braces, the teeth are corrected to such an extent that the gums also recede.

Cognise receding gums

You notice that you suffer from receding gums when, for example, when drinking hot or cold drinks, you notice an extra sensitivity on your teeth. You get this sensitivity because the gums have become exposed. And you therefore feel the influence of hot and cold, including when eating, very well. Incidentally, it is slightly different from Lingua villosa, black hair tongue. This condition can also result from poor oral hygiene, but occurs on the back of the tongue and not on the teeth.

Do you recognise one or more of these symptoms?

Fortunately, there are a number of ways to counteract pulling up gums. A number of things you can already do yourself, such as not pressing too hard on your gums while brushing, eating healthily, not drinking alcohol and not smoking. It is also important to brush regularly with a fluoride-containing toothpaste and an electric toothbrush. Change the brush regularly and choose one that is not too hard. Should you suffer from a severe form of raised gums, it is wise to have it treated by a dentist.
